MBP record #96668

The Risso's Dolphin, often called Grampus, can be found in deep temperate and tropical waters nearly worldwide. It subsists primarily on squid and fish, and is often found in groups of 10 to 50. This species can be identified by its large dorsal fin, almost-square head, and often through extensive scarring on the body, especially on older adults. Color can range from dark gray to almost white. This photo was taken far offshore in Maryland waters on a pelagic trip out of Lewes, Delaware. The small, lighter fin the background is that of a young calf. Note the extensive scarring on the adult in foreground.
